Patience in the Azure is built as a distorted spatio-temporal system in which a stable temporal reference and three distinct manifestations of time coexist within the same spatial field.

SOLARIS — Abstract temporal unit · Suspended time

BLUE PULSES — Energy and residual time

At its centre is Solaris, an abstract temporal unit suspended in time. It acts as the visible temporal reference of the system, against which the other temporalities become perceptible.

Its luminous core is born from the centre of the star and separates from it, while remaining bound to its field of forces. Controlled by the visitor, it moves freely across the field, introducing the time of action: an immediate and unpredictable present. Yet as it approaches its point of origin, forces emanating from the centre push it away.

Behind the fixed structure, a shifting shadow evolves independently. Suggesting a distorted sundial without behaving like one, it introduces an autonomous temporality — a measure of time that continuously escapes exact measurement.

Finally, blue luminous pulses emerge within the intervals between the rays when crossed by the moving core. Their energy propagates bidirectionally from the centre of each pulse, echoing the energetic dynamics explored in the preparatory drawings. While in contact with the light, their presence is vivid and immediate. Once the light moves away, the pulses stretch and slow down, while the remaining energy persists as slower echoes before gradually fading. Their duration thus extends beyond the event that produced them, introducing a time of persistence and memory.

Solaris acts as the visible temporal reference of the system — an abstract unit suspended in time. Around it, the moving core, the shifting shadow and the residual pulses manifest time differently, each according to its own rhythm, overlapping without fully coinciding.

Patience in the Azure approaches time not as a single universal measure, but through multiple manifestations shaped by movement, relation and perception.

Time is not represented, but made perceptible.

VIDEO SEQUENCE

Drawn towards its point of origin, the luminous core follows its course under an increasing pull of gravity. As it approaches the centre, its trajectory tightens and its kinetic energy increases. It is now carried by the force of movement. There, spinning around the fixed centre — never absorbed by it — it merges with the shadow of autonomous time: a fleeting convergence of two temporalities. At this threshold of energetic transformation, its energy shifts into another manifestation: its radiance and presence are transformed. It releases itself as though freed from its mass; propelled outward, it floats weightlessly and re-emerges on the other side of the field.

Its passage releases luminous pulses across the system, stretching into slower, evanescent echoes before gradually fading. The core is then drawn towards its point of origin once again, and the choreography begins anew — a cycle of attraction, fusion, release and regeneration.

PERSONAL NOTE

Patience in the Azur takes its title from Hubert Reeves’ book of the same name.

Three years ago, my oldest friend, Grégory Moreau, a researcher in quantum physics, recommended it to me as a first doorway into physics and cosmology. He told me that the book had been decisive in his own path towards becoming a physicist.

The book deeply moved me and contributed to my growing fascination with physics and our perception of the universe, nurturing a curiosity that had long been present in my work and thinking.

Patience dans l’Azur carries its title as a personal homage to Hubert Reeves, and to the sense of wonder his writing opened for me.
